Why is eye health important?
Simply to maintain your eye sight for life!
Here’s how to maintain your eye health.
1. Regular Eye Exams
Ensure that your vision and health is good and any changes occurring is detected early enough, so precautions can be taken.
Make sure you have the best vision possible, particularly for driving.
2. Nutrition
A good diet has been proven to be effective in reducing the risk of developing all health and eye conditions. Foods rich in carotenoids, vitamins C&E, omega 3 fatty acids & zinc can reduce oxidative stress which helps to keep the body tissues healthy and that includes your eyes.
3. Keep Fit
Regular exercise and activities regulates the blood flow and nutrients absorption through your body, including your eyes.
Walking for at least an hour a day is more than adequate.
4. Stop smoking
Smoking is strongly linked to development of cataract and macula degeneration. Tobacco affects absorption of oxygen in the bloodstream that causes an increase in number of free radicals leading to oxidative stress.
This results in bodily tissue damage including the eyes.
5. Wear Sunglasses when outdoors
Protection from UV rays is essential even when it’s not sunny. UV light is almost certainly everywhere and all year round.
Wearing sunglasses has proven to slow down the progression of cataract, skin cancers(which can occur around the eyelids), also stopping the onset of corneal and iris inflammation.
If you find sunglasses troublesome, consider spectacles with blue light filter antireflection coating.
5. Plenty of sleep
Sleeping well can improve our mood and our energy levels.
Lack of sleep can cause blurred vision, dry eyes, eyestrain and headaches.
We should aim for 6-8hours of sleep.
6. Wear eye protection for work and sport.
Shield your eyes from flying debris, rubble and balls by wearing the safety specs.
Simply wearing safety specs can reduce the risk of injuries by up to 90%.
7. Spend time outdoors
Going for a walk or just sitting in the garden relaxes the muscles in your eyes, this is particularly important for children as this can reduce the chances of developing myopia or slow it down.
7. Regular breaks from screens.
If you are using screens for most of your working day, following the 20-20-20 rule will reduce the symptoms of digital eyestrain. Can also reduce dry eyes if blink in those 20 seconds.
If still experiencing symptoms, consider getting a pair of specs with blue light filter antireflection coating.
8. Contact lens wearers ~ Hygiene!!!
Always wash your hands…
Dry them after making sure there is no trace of water on your hands before handling your contact lenses. This vital precaution will reduce the risk of infection.
