Diabetic Eye Disease
14th Nov 2025

Diabetic Retinopathy and Maculopathy are eye conditions under the classification of Diabetic Eye Disease. It is caused by leaking blood vessels and releasing fluids on the retina.
This condition is due to fluctuation of blood sugar levels and /or non-compliance in care of Diabetes.
The main factors that affect the development of this condition are:
~ Diet.
~ Compliance of medication.
~ Compliance in regular checks for Diabetes and Diabetic eye screening.
~ High blood pressure.
~ High cholesterol.
~ Smoking.
~ Length of time in Diabetes diagnosis.
Poor control of blood sugar levels will lead to progression of these conditions. The earliest signs should be considered a warning sign to take action to slow down its speed in advancing.
In the most extreme cases, if the condition increases in severity it can lead to vision loss.
Sadly, Diabetic Retinopathy is the leading cause of blindness.
These lifestyle changes can make all the difference in either improving the health of the retina or slowing down the progression.
~ Keeping up to date with appointments with your doctor/nurse.
~ Attend your Diabetic eye screening appointment.
~ Gauge your own blood sugar levels.
~ Regular exercise/Keep Fit.
~ Monitor your nutrition.

Treating Diabetic Retinopathy is normally done at the moderate stage of the condition.
The first line of treatment is with laser(called laser photo coagulation). The aim is to reduce the oxygen demand of the retina and prevent further leaking of the vessels and from new vessels growing. These ‘new vessels’ can cause vision loss.
Treatment for Diabetic Maculopathy is the same for wet macula degeneration with injections(called anti-VEGF). The aim this treatment is to ‘dry out’ the fluid from the macula.
The Purpose of these treatments is to stop vision loss.
If the condition is at the advanced stage, then surgery is necessary.
