Sports Safety

14th Apr 2025

Sports is a fun way of bringing people together, either watching or playing.

It is important to be mindful of safety when playing as sport related injuries are easily avoided by wearing protective gear.

Wearing protective eyewear will reduce the risk of injury significantly as well as preserving your eyesight.

Depending on the nature of the sport, certain frames will be advised accordingly.

Contact lenses is a great option for sport as they will give peripheral and stability in vision. They are good for outdoor activities and martial arts. Caution need to be taken with water sports (as chemicals in the water is a source of infection), ideally daily disposables with swimming googles should be worn and then removed afterwards.

All ball games, cycling, running and skiing, the ideal frame is a wrap around (as pictured above) as they will give protection over and beyond the eyes making impact on any flying objects almost impossible.

As these are outdoor activities, the wrap around will also give protection from wind and dust.

Tinted lenses will protect against light, particularly with polarised filters.

Contrast filters are available which will filter out light at certain wavelengths.

Variable/Photochromic tinted lenses will filter out light when activated by uv light.

Most wrap around eyewear can accommodate for spectacle prescriptions with a glazable insert.

Polycarbonate lenses are recommended as they are durable and have a high impact resistance.

For swimming, goggles will protect your eyes from the chemicals and chlorine in the water and are available as prescription for vision correction.
