The Heart & The Eye

24th Feb 2026

The heart is a muscle which is responsible for the circulation of blood throughout our bodies. It is regulated by our heartbeat. The heart is located at the centre of the body slightly displaced to the left side. It transports Oxygen and nutrients to our bodies as well as removing Carbon Dioxide.

The main disorders of the Heart are:

Hypertension: The elevation of blood pressure, the most common health condition treated worldwide. This is commonly seen after the age of 40 and there is no apparent cause. Lifestyle factors can influence the development.

Hyperlipidemia: Increased cholesterol or increased low density lipoprotein levels in the blood. It can be diet dependent. During your ‘eye exam’, a grey ring around the cornea or yellow lumps around the eyelids may be detected which could indicate this condition.

Anaemia –  Low red blood cells in the body.

Embolism – Blockage of the blood vessel, by a mass of material.

With these conditions, our vision can be affected if left untreated or uncontrolled as these can lead to changes in the eye blood vessels.

Treatment for Heart Conditions.

~Hypertension – medication which may include ACE inhibitors, Beta-Blockers, Calcium channel blockers, Diuretics & Vasodilators.

~Hyperlipidemia – medication which includes Statins or Resins. For Low density Lipoprotein, a new drug called Incilsiran has become available (www.bhf.org), this is in the form of an injection.

~Anaemia – medication with Iron supplements, common one being Ferrous Sulphate.

~Embolism – medication with Anti-Coagulants. In severe cases, surgery may be needed.

If any of these medications are prescribed to you, they could preserve your sight.
